Curb' Shot

Which mixed drink came before the cocktail?

MORE

Punch was introduced from the Indian subcontinent to England by the employees of the East India Company in the late 17th Century or arguably 16th Century.
The original drink of the Indian Subcontinent was named paantsch, the word punch may have been a loan word from the Indian Paanch, meaning five, as the drink was usually made with five ingredients, alcohol, sugar, lemon or lime juice, water and spices.

The term punch was first recorded in English documents in 1632, and the need for a single-serving punch grew, giving birth to the sling, a drink composed on spirits, sweetener and nutmeg

Chilled so the layers stay separated, it`s essentially a series of straight shots in quick succession. Slam it fast for a wild ride of clashing flavors and unapologetic potency. The spice of Firewater meets rich coffee Kahlua and minty Rumple Minze for a disorienting combination. Topped off with creamy Bailey`s Irish cream, it finishes smooth but keeps hitting. • Bacardi 151 Proof Rum

Overproof Rums are Rums with a much higher alcohol concentration which is usually greater than 57.5% but although 151 proof means 75.5% ABV, most Rums with 57.5% Alcohol are labelled as 151.

Overproof Rums are highly inflammable and are usually used in cocktails as a top layer meant to be ignited and burst into flames, rendering a charred flavour to the drink while arousing awe and interest by quite a fire show.

Overproof Rums are not meant to be drank neat or even as a base spirit, the alcohol concentration is too high, but it can add special character to mixed drinks.

Bacardi 151 was a famous overproof Rum and although it has been discontinued in 2016, there are other pretty famous brands like Lemon Hart 151, Hamilton 151, Wray and Nephew White Overproof Rum and Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof.

Note: Gunpowder Proofing a Navy Rum was an old concept, where Rum poured over Gun powder would not wet the gun powder and when lit, the gun powder will catch fire once the alcohol has burnt.

Navy rum was originally a blend mixed from rums produced in the West Indies. It was initially supplied at a strength of 100 degrees (UK) proof, 57% alcohol by volume (ABV), as that was the only strength that could be tested (by the gunpowder test) before the invention of the hydrometer. The term "Navy strength" is used in modern Britain to specify spirits bottled at 57% ABV. - Wikepedia

Firewater may refer to two distinctive alcohols.

Firstly, etymologically, it is a loan word translation from native american, and it refers to whiskey as fire warter, early settlers brought with them poor quality whiskey and the traders frequently added red pepper to it to hide the cheap, doctored alcohol, and the burn of the cheap high rpoof alcohol gave it the name "fire water". Today, a high proof liquor is referred to as Fire Water.

Secondly, it refers to a Schnapps, the Fire Water Hot Cinnamon Schnapps Liqueur is a red-hot cinnamon flavoured liqueur that has a red colour and a string cinnamon and raw alcohol aroma, while the taste is a combination of corn syrup sweetness and the spicy cinnamon gives it a hot feeling and the overall drink leaves you feeling warm over all.

  • Rumple Minze Or Peppermint Schnapps

Peppermint Schnapps is a clear spirit that tastes like liquid candy cane with astringent, mouth wash like after taste. It is created by adding peppermint flavour to a clear grain spirit and is usually 15% Alcohol by Volume.

In the US it is popular around the holidays, as shots or in creamy sweet cocktails. Peppermint Schnapps is produced by many brands and in different qualities. A regular brand is DeKupyer, while Rumple Minze or Dr. McGillicuddy’s Mint Schnapps are better quality versions of the same.
