Chai Toddy

Why was Gin and Tonic invented?

MORE

The Gin and Tonic was invented by the British in the 19th century as a way to make tonic water more palatable. Tonic water was originally used to prevent malaria but it was so bitter that it was difficult to drink. The addition of gin and lime made it much more palatable and turned it into a popular cocktail.

Tonic water was originally created by the British Army or Navy, as a medicinal drink to help fight malaria. The active ingredient in tonic water is quinine which has been shown to be effective in treating the disease. Today tonic water is still consumed for its medicinal benefits although it is also commonly mixed with gin or vodka to create a refreshing cocktail.

  • Spiced Rum

Spiced Rum is either Dark or White Rum that has been steeped with herbs and spices to render additional flavour to it. Spices can range from Cinnamon and Black Pepper to Rosemary and Anise seeds.

  • Peppermint Schnapps

Peppermint Schnapps is a clear spirit that tastes like liquid candy cane with astringent, mouth wash like after taste. It is created by adding peppermint flavour to a clear grain spirit and is usually 15% Alcohol by Volume.

In the US it is popular around the holidays, as shots or in creamy sweet cocktails. Peppermint Schnapps is produced by many brands and in different qualities. A regular brand is DeKupyer, while Rumple Minze or Dr. McGillicuddy’s Mint Schnapps are better quality versions of the same.

For those who want a better experience than this mint spirit that has an astringent feel, Creme de Menthe is a smoother alternative.

  • Honey

Honey is a viscous, sweet liquid made by honey bees and some other bees, from sugary secretion of plants, nectar, that they bring back to their honeycombs in the nest and regurgitates into the cells for preservation, enzymatic reactions turn these flower nectar into honey.
Honey is resplendent with micronutrients and have loads of antioxidants, as well as antibacterial and antifungal agents in it. Health benefits of honey are innumerous but without getting into that, let's focus on why honey is a preferred sweetner in drink mixing.
Honey has a sweetness factor of 1 which is as sweet as the table salt Sucrose, but honey's thickness, and depth of flavour stand uop against other ingredients, where as simple syrup or agave nectar often are overwhelmed by the flavour of other ingredients. To top that honey adds viscosity to drinks giving it a different and luxurious texture.
