Omeed's Mom

What is the story of Betsy's Braces and the origin of the word Cocktail?

MORE

It is a popular rumour that a barmaid named Betsy, served a mixed drink in her tavern, during the Revolutionary War. The drink she made was called Betsy's Braces and it is said to have been popular with American and French soldiers. According to this legend Betsy’s tavern was located near Hall's Corners in New York.

It is rumoured that the French soldiers coined the term cocktail that follows an anecdotal incident.

There is a story say that American soldiers stole male pheasants from their British counterparts and celebrated this at the Tavern. It is said at the time of the toast one of the American soldiers proclaimed "Here's to divine liquor which tastes as delicious to the palate as the cock's tails are beautiful to the eye." This was followed by the French reply "Vive le cocktail!"

A story, but a great one indeed

  • Stoli Vanil Vodka

Vodka is an European clear distilled alcoholic drink that has been one of the most popular drinks across the world .

You'll find it to be the most popular spirit in drink making because of it's neutral taste and absence of flavour and colour.

Vodka often replaces Gin in many traditional cocktails

Vodka is known to be good for the heart, and if consumed in moderation, can prove to be good for cardiovascular health

Note that these days there are flavoured Vodka available in the market too, and some cocktails do make use of them.

  • Bacardi 151 Rum

Bacardi 151 is a discontinued brand of highly alcoholic Rum made by Bacardi Limited of Bermuda. It is has alcohol concentration level of 151 US Proof or has 75.5% alcohol by volume. Way higher than a regular 35% - 40% ABV of a standard Rum. Bacardi discontinued the 151 in 2016.

Because of it's high alcohol concentration a 151 Proof Rum is highly inflammable and is thus used in making stunning flaming shots. Bacardi probably discontinued the Bacardi 151 after a few lawsuits, but there are other brands of 151 Proof or overproof Rum available in the market

  • Pomegranate Juice

Pomegranate Juice is the juice of the pomegranate fruit, with a sweet and sour, musty, fruity aromatic flavour and an astringent mouthfeel. However fresh pomegranate tastes vastly different from Pomegranate Juice since the juice is "flash" pasteurised before bottling, which means heating at high temperatures of 90-95 ° C for 45 seconds, the juice flavours are altered by the heat. Be careful when deciding whether you would need fresh pomegranate or juice in your drink based on the demand of the cocktail.
