Miles of Smiles

How do I create a citrus twist?

MORE

Follow these steps for a perfect citrus twist:

1. Select Fresh Fruit: Choose a fresh, firm citrus fruit.
2. Use a Peeler or Knife: Peel a thin strip of zest from the fruit, avoiding the bitter white pith.
3. Express the Oils: Hold the twist over the cocktail and give it a twist to release the essential oils.

  • Amaretto

Amaretto is a liqueur, a sweet Italian liqueur that originated in Saronno. There are different brands and each have their slight variations and ingredients vary from apricot kernel, bitter almonds, peach stones or almonds, all these are natural sources of the benzaldehyde that brings the almond flavour to the liqueur. Amaretto usually contains a 21% to 48% Alcohol by Volume.

Amaretto liqueur can be drunk straight or used as an ingredient in mixed drinks, or with coffee.

The name Amaretto originated from the Italian word amaro, meaning bitter. Amaretto's bitterness is derived from the drupe kernel and although the bitterness of Amaretto tends to be mild, sweeteners and at time sweet almonds are added to enhance the flavour of the final product.

  • Peppermint Schnapps

Peppermint Schnapps is a clear spirit that tastes like liquid candy cane with astringent, mouth wash like after taste. It is created by adding peppermint flavour to a clear grain spirit and is usually 15% Alcohol by Volume.

In the US it is popular around the holidays, as shots or in creamy sweet cocktails. Peppermint Schnapps is produced by many brands and in different qualities. A regular brand is DeKupyer, while Rumple Minze or Dr. McGillicuddy’s Mint Schnapps are better quality versions of the same.

For those who want a better experience than this mint spirit that has an astringent feel, Creme de Menthe is a smoother alternative.

  • Rye Whiskey

Rye Whisky is essentially Canadian Whisky, Canadian corn whiskey uses some rye grain added to the mash to give it more flavour and this characteristic style and flavour gave Canadian Whisky the name Rye Whisky.

But, Rye Whiskey can be American too, it is essentially a Bourbon but must be distilled from at least 51% rye grain to be labeled a Rye Whiskey.

So the rule of thumb is, if it is referred to as Rye Whiskey it is American, and if its labeled as Rye Whisky, it is Canadian.

However, we have embarked on a journey of manually updating the relative strength of cocktails, their flavour profile and in the future aim at providing approximate calories per drink too.
Blue Tick Project:We aim at manually validating and verifying each cocktail in their current context and mark them as valid, where, a blue tick would mean that the recipe has been verified and is 100% accurate while an orange tick would mean the recipe has low confidence.
Where as a grey tick would mean that the recipe has not yet been manually validated or verified recently.
