Cheeky Vimto

Why do we call a mixed drink a cocktail?

MORE

There are several origin theories as noted in Difford's Guide, the two most plausible theories are here
The first relates to cocking up poor quality booze with herbs, bitters and mixes, as Cocktail historian David Wondrich writes “if you had an old horse you were trying to sell, you would put some ginger up it’s butt, and it would cock it’s tail up and be frisky. That was known as cock-tail.”

The second theory states that in an Mexican tavern, English sailors noticed that mixed drinks were stirred with the root of a plant known as cola de gallo, or cock's tail in English. The name came to England with the sailors and then to the USA.

Cheeky Vimto Recipe

Combine both ingredients in a highball glass, stir and serve.

Cheeky Vimto, the original recipe used the alcopop version of Vimto along with Ruby Port and WKD Vodka.

The makers of Vimto discontinued the Alcopop version of Vimto but they encourage the use of Vimto as a mixer.

The version of Cheeky Vimto presented here is the version without Vimto and is served in nightclubs and bars across UK, it is a popular drink among Britain's youth.

Cheeky Vimto is also known as D4 diesel.

This variation without Vimto was described in Amy Winehouse's biography as one of her beverages of choice.

Cheeky Vimto still retains the Vimto name because it's taste resembles Vimto. IT was introduced in early 2000s and became famous in 2005, when Daily Mail reported it to be the favourite drink of Welsh singer songwriter Charlotte Church.

It is a super damn tasty drink, a mix of Ruby Port and a Blue Liquor like WKD Vodka makes it a visual stunner too, but the problem is, this is Cheeky drink is so damn tasty that you wouldn't stop drinking it and you wouldn't know how drunk you are, because it's a pretty damn strong cocktail too.

  • Port

Vinho de Porto as it is called in Portuguese, or simply Port is a Portuguese fortified wine produced in Douro Valley of Northern Portugal. It is sweet, thick red wine, headier than heavier than regular wine, and is usually higher in alcohol content than unfortified wines.

The production process of a Port is responsible for this higher alcohol content and sweeter and thicker texture. In the production of a Port, fermentation is halted before all the sugar is converted to alcohol and then distilled grape spirits are added to it to fortify it.

Port wine is now produced in many different regions and countries including Argentina, Australia, Canada, France, India, South Africa, Spain, and the United States, but under the European Union Protected Designation of Origin guidelines, only wines from Portugal are allowed to be labelled a PORT.

Port comes in several styles, which can be divided in two broad categories, wines matured in glass bottles and wines matured in wooden barrels.
Port matured in sealed glass bottles, due to lack of exposure to air, goes through reductive ageing, the wine loses colour very slowly and the resulting wine is smooth and bright red, while wood barrel matured port, has some exposure to oxygen due to the permeability of wood and goes through oxidative ageing, and they lose colour faster and lose some volume through evaporation too, resulting in a slightly viscous wine.

Ruby port is the product of a reductive ageing, and the process retains its bright red colour and full bodied taste, while Tawny Ports are ports made from red grapes that are aged in wooden barrels which end up giving then a tawny-brown or golden-brown colour. The flavour too is nutty instead of the fruity flavour of a Ruby.
