Caramel Apple Orchard Martini

What is The First Recorded Cocktail in History?

MORE

The oldest recorded cocktail is El Draque, named after the legendary English privateer ( pirate, depending on which side you are ) Sir Francis Drake. Sir Francis Drake was a British Naval Officer and a Slave Trader who was on his mission of pillaging the Spanish settlements in the Caribbean islands, and when he was in Havana, he found his men severely ill with malnutrition and scurvy. He sent a shore party in search of a cure and a cure they did find, the natives of Matecumbe, the southernmost tip of Florida, taught them the recipe of an alcoholic mix of a bark from the Chuchuhuasi tree and a distilled sugarcane beverage known as Aguardiente ( a sort of Schnapps ) , made from raw sugarcane juice, lime and mint.

This drink indeed saved Francis Drake's men and this is the precursor of the modern Mojito, and when Mojito was invented in Havana they simply replaced the Aguardiente with Rum and dropped the medicinal tree bark much in a way Quinine has been gradually removed from Tonic Water and many other recipes.

Now this drink that saved Drake's men was recorded and named in honour of Drake, the pirate, it's called the El Draque. This is probably the first recorded mixed drink.

  • Oval Vodka

Vodka is an European clear distilled alcoholic drink that has been one of the most popular drinks across the world .

You'll find it to be the most popular spirit in drink making because of it's neutral taste and absence of flavour and colour.

Vodka often replaces Gin in many traditional cocktails

Vodka is known to be good for the heart, and if consumed in moderation, can prove to be good for cardiovascular health

Note that these days there are flavoured Vodka available in the market too, and some cocktails do make use of them.

  • Hiram Walker Butterscotch Schnapps

Schnapps is an alcoholic beverage that can be a distilled fruit brandy, a herbal liqueur, infusions and flavoured liqueurs, made by infusing fruit syrups, spices or artificial flavourings to a neutral grain spirit.

Schnapps in German means a strong alcoholic drink and it's usually a 60-80 proof (30% - 40% ABV) beverage.

Butterscotch Schnapps is a Schanpps made by infusing butter and brown sugar in grain spirit, and is designed to taste just like butterscotch caramels and are used in creating sweet cocktails and shots. It is usually 30–42 proof (15% – 21% ABV ) and is weaker than other Schnapps.

The most famous Butterscotch Schnapps is Dekuyper Buttershot Schnapps.

  • Fresh Apple Cider

Cider can be of two types, alcoholic and the non-alcoholic apple cider, of the alcoholic ciders, there are two varieties. One being, Hard Cider, which is a fermented alcoholic beverage made from apple juice, hard cider is akin to beer and is less alcoholic than wine. The other is, Dry Cider, which is also a fermented liquor made from apple juice, but the dry cider is allowed to ferment almost all of the sugar in apples and has less than 0.5% residual sugar and is more acidic and less sweet than Hard Cider. The yeast consumes the natural sugar of cider and makes the dry cider less sweet and highly alcoholic.
