ANGRY HELEN Recipe

Mix together calvados, grenadine and lemonade with ice. Strain into a tall glass filled with crushed ice. Garnish with apple slice dipped in lemonade to avoid discolouring This drink is great. The apple brandy is complimented surprisingly well by sweet pomegranate from the grenadine and the colour of the cocktail is a delicate pink just like apple blossom.

  • Calvados

Calvados is a cider brandy from Normandy, France. Calvados is distilled from cider made from specially grown and selected apples, from over 200 named varieties. The fruit is harvested and pressed into a juice that is fermented into a dry cider. It is then distilled into eau de vie. After two years of aging in oak casks, it can be sold as calvados. The longer it is aged, the smoother the drink becomes. Usually, the maturation goes on for several years.

Calvados is different from a Hard Cider which is popular in the British Isles.

a Hard Cider is a bubbly low alcohol beverage that is often mistaken for a beer for it's carbonated nature and is not even a wine since it's fermentatation is not complete and thus it's less alcoholic and mildly sweet (since apple doesn't contain as much sugar as grapes even the semi-fermented beverage doesn't contain as much leftover sugar as a wine at s similar stage would have ) whereas a Calvados is produced by distilling a cider.

"Calvados is the regimental drink of The Queen's Own Rifles of Canada, The Royal Regina Rifles, The Royal Canadian Hussars, Le Régiment de Hull, Le Régiment de Maisonneuve, and The Sherbrooke Hussars. The troops were gifted with Calvados as the units passed through Normandy following the D-Day invasion." - Wikipedia

  • Grenadine

Grenadine is a common non-alcoholic pomegranate syrup with a characteristic deep red colour. It is a very popular cocktail ingredient, used for its pomegranate flavour and more for its ability to add a reddish to pink tint to a cocktail.

The name Grenadine originates from the French for pomegranate, which is grenade.

Grenadine is not subjected to regulations like alcoholic beverages are, and there are no region specific formulae any more, and thus manufacturers often replace pomegranate with blackcurrant juice and other fruit juices while retaining the same flavour profile.

Many producers now use artificial ingredients like high fructose corn syrup, water, citric acid, sodium citrate, sodium benzoate and food grade red colour along with natural and artificial flavours.

  • Lemonade to taste

This sweetened lemon flavoured beverage is an eternal popular throughout the world and there are varieties of homemade lemonades found everywhere. In North Africa and South Asia, cloudy lemonade dominates, be sure if your cocktail requires a clear lemonade or a cloudy one, which is indication of fruit pulp presence in the mix.
