Piedra Putamadre

Did you know of the Brandy Thermometer

MORE

Alcohol Thermometers are not uncommon even today, in fact the first thermometer designed were alcohol thermometers. Alcohol Thermometers operate in a different temperature range than Mercury thermometers, while Mercury has a higher boiling point and can be useful in measuring high temperatures, Alcohol thermometers are used to measure temperatures below -70 C.

However that is not the point, the point is that early thermometers from the 1600s used Brandy instead of pure alcohol, unlike modern alcohol thermometers, and were eventually replaced by mercury.

  • Fernet Branca Bitters

Fernet Branca Bitters is brand of Fernet ( Fernet is an Italian type of Amaro, a bitter aromatic spirit, made from herbs and spices like myrrh, rhubarb, chamomile, cardamom, aloe and saffron ), formulated in Milan in 1845, and manufactured by Fratelli Branca, it is one of the best known Italian bitters.

Fernet Branca formulated by herbalist Bernardino Branca, in 1845, was originally formulated and marketed as a cure for Cholera and menstrual cramps. The product gained popularity and the Fratelli Branca Distillery was established and later in 1907, they began exporting it to Argentina where it gained immense popularity and in 1925, Fratelli Branca established a distillery in Argentina. In USA, it gained popularity during the prohibitions since it was sold at pharmacies as a Medicine.

The original recipe is still in use and is a trade secret. The Branca Distillery states on its web site that the drink contains "Rhubarb from China, Gentian from France, Galanga from India or from Sri Lanka, (and) Chamomile from Europe [or] Argentina",[16] as well as linden (tiliae flos), iris, saffron, zedoary, myrrh and cinchona. - Wikipedia

  • Anisette

Anisette is as the name suggests, an anise flavoured liqueur most commonly consumed in the Mediterranean countries. It is a colourless, sweet liqueur and the sweetness comes from the added sugar, which is in contrast with dry anise flavoured spirits like Absinthe.

Anisette have two distinct production variations, one is a distilled drink, created by distilling fermented anise, and the other is a simple maceration of anise filtered to Anisette.

Note that often Pastis liqueur is confused with Anisette but Pastis is different and it uses Licorice and Anise.

Note: To substitute Anisette in a cocktail, if absolutely necessary, either steep Anise Extract and Anise Oil ( preferably Green Anise, since Anisette is created with Mediterranean Green Anise ) in neutral Vodka for a few days and add sugar syrup to finish, and use, or use Anise Seed and follow Home Recipes for Anisette to create your own.
