Caesars Bloody Maria

What is the story of Betsy's Braces and the origin of the word Cocktail?

MORE

It is a popular rumour that a barmaid named Betsy, served a mixed drink in her tavern, during the Revolutionary War. The drink she made was called Betsy's Braces and it is said to have been popular with American and French soldiers. According to this legend Betsy’s tavern was located near Hall's Corners in New York.

It is rumoured that the French soldiers coined the term cocktail that follows an anecdotal incident.

There is a story say that American soldiers stole male pheasants from their British counterparts and celebrated this at the Tavern. It is said at the time of the toast one of the American soldiers proclaimed "Here's to divine liquor which tastes as delicious to the palate as the cock's tails are beautiful to the eye." This was followed by the French reply "Vive le cocktail!"

A story, but a great one indeed

  • Tequila

Tequila is a distilled beverage, made only from a specific cultivar of Agave Tequilana called 'Weber Azul' or Blue Agave, native to the states of Jalisco, Colima, Nayarit and Aguascalientes in Mexico. The Blue Agave grows above an altitude of 1500 m and are juicy succulents with spiky fleshy leaves.

Tequila is made around the city of Tequila 40 miles northwest of Guadaljara, and in the Jaliscan Highlands of Central Western Mexico. Mexican laws state that Tequila can only be produces in the state of Jalisco and a few limited municipalities in the other Blue Agave growing regions.

Tequila is 35% to 55% Alcohol by Volume (70 and 110 U.S. proof), it must be at least 40% ABV to be sold as Tequila in the USA.

Tequila is a distilled derivative of the pre-Columbian fermented beverage called pulque, made from the Agave plant. When the Spanish conquistadors ran out of their brandy, they started distilling Agave to produce a distilled spirit. This by 1600s was what Don Pedro Sánchez de Tagle, the Marquis of Altamira, began mass-producing in his distillery near modern day Jalisco and came to be known as Tequila.

  • Clamato Juice

the name Clamato is a portmanteau of clam and tomato. Clamato is made of tomato juice concentrate and sugar and is flavoured with spices, dried clam broth, monosodium glutamate ( MSG ). IT is made by Mott's.
It tastes like a blend of tomato juice, Worcestershire Sauce and mashed clam.

  • Tomato Juice

Tomato juice is obviously the juice of ripe tomatoes, and is usually used as a beverage, either plain or in cocktails such as Bloody Mary. Tomato juice releases enzymes that breaks down alcohol faster in your liver, so if you are looking to start the next day early and fresh, opt for a cocktail with Tomato juice in it.

  • Worcestershire Sauce

Worcestershire Sauce is a fermented liquid condiment created by the British chemists John Wheeley Lea and Henry Perrins, in the city of Worcester in Worchestershire, England, in the first half of the 19th Century.
Fermented fish sauce has ben in use in Greco-Roman cuisine, fermented anchovy sauce can be traced back to the 17th Century Europe too. However this particular concoction is tentatively attributed by the original label of the company's product as a sauce that came "from the recipe of a nobleman in the county", the company also claimed that Lord Marcus Sandys, ex-Governor of Bengal, encountered it while in India with the East India Company in the 1830s, and he commissioned a local apothecary to recreate it. The original recipe includes vinger, molasses, sugar. salt, anchovies, tamarind, shallots/onions, garlic, other spices and flavourings, and quite resemble an Indian fish curry or fish sauce recipe indeed.
In food and in cocktail, this sauce provides for a background flavour and is a source of umami, the fifth flavour or the flavour of savouriness. The spicy richness is what makes Bloody Mary, Caesar and Bull Shot cocktails the spicy, salty and overall savoury flavour.
