Which cocktails are attributed to the Royal Navy of England?

The Royal Navy of England is credited with the invention of both Gin and Tonic as well as Pink Gin. The reason for this is that these drinks were created as a way to make the English sailors more resistant to malaria.

Gin and Tonic was created by adding quinine to gin which made it more palatable and thus easier for sailors to drink.

Pink Gin on the other hand was created by adding a dash of Angostura bitters to gin, the dark red bitter turned the whole drink pink. This concoction was supposed to cure sea sickness.

Gin and Tonic though, is generally attributed to the Colonial Armed Forces of England in general, not just the Navy.

Swamp Ogre Recipe


Add a thin film of olive oil on the bottom of a shot glass. Add a splash of lime juice and a pinch of paprika over top. Pour 1 oz of Absinthe down the inside wall of the glass and then pour the molasses directly into the absinthe until the shot glass is full. Down it quickly after this last mixture.

  • Absinthe

    Absinthe is an anise flavoured spirit derived from several plants including grand wormwood. green anise and fennel ,along with other medicinal and culinary herbs. Absinthe is Swiss in origin, and was created in the late 18th Century, it rose to tremendous popularity in the late 19th and early 20th Century among Parisian artists and writers, and became associated with the Bohemian culture and notoriety.

    Earnest Hemmingway, James Joyce, Charles Baudelaire, Toulouse-Lautrec, Pablo Picasso, Vincent Van Gogh, Oscar Wilde, Edgar Allan Poe, Lord Byron to name a few celebrated auteurs and thinkers who were Absinthe aficionados and it's needless to say their association took Absinthe to an unprecedented popularity and notoriety at the same time. It also has the reputation of being a psychoactive drug and hallucinogen, although these claims don't have any scientific evidence, resulting in Absinthe ban in USA and Europe for a long period.

    Absinthes are of two types, distilled and cold mixed. Distilled Absinthe used a technique similar to Gin where the distillation removes the undesired herbal bitter influences while producing the clear spirit with the desired complexity and aroma retained in it.

    Cold mixed Absinthe is produced using the inexpensive process of blending flavouring essencs and artificial colouring in commercial alcohol, just as flavoured Vodka is produced by infusion, it is this Cold Mixed Absinthe that can reach as high as 90% ABV. Beware that due to the lack of Absinthe regulations in many countries. producers falsify advertising claims like, referring to their product as "distilled".

  • Lime Juice

    Lime Juice being rich in Vitamin C is an excellent remedy for sore throat and aids in digestion and controls blood sugar, and also promoted weight loss. It is used for various culinary and non-culinary purposes all over the world. Lime juice is known to reduce or even reverse the effects of excessive alcohol consumption and intoxication.
    The difference between Lime Juice and Lemon Juice is that although the sweet and sour Lemon and the bitter and sour Lime are two different fruits, they have similar properties and tastes similar too, the Lime, unlike the sweet and large Lemon, is used raw and is usually plucked green and has more bitterness and sourness in it's taste, and is grown better in tropical and sub-tropical climates.
    In drink mixing, fresh lemon juice brings a tangy zing to so many classic drinks and in fact, it's the most used ingredient in drink mixing other than the liquors of course.

  • Olive Oil

    The Mediterranean shrub called Olive produce small bitter fruits known as Olive, and is of major agricultural importance in the Mediterranean region, and is the source of Olive Oil and as the fermented or preserved fruit that is one of the core ingredients of Mediterranean cuisine.
    The green olive, picked fully grown but unripe are picked and due to the presence of Oleuropein, are not edible on their own, young fruits are very bitter and the bitterness has to be removed by curing and fermentation, to make them edible.
    Black olives are ripe olives, the fruits are picked at full maturity and the fruits have Oleuropein, the phenolic bitter compound found in its skin, although in much lower concentration than in the young green fruits, still the Oleuropein is leached to remove the bitterness and then preserved in brine and sterilised during the canning process.
    Sliced black olives are used as topping on sandwiches and pizzas, in cocktails like the Martini, green olives are used and the brine flavour doesn’t go with Sweet Vermouth and many mixologists thus prefer using a Dry Vermouth which pairs well with the brine flavour of the olive. Black olives are used in some cocktails too and variations of the Dirty Martini, however green olive is more often used.
