There are plenty of weird cocktails but Sourtoe wins the title of the weirdest cocktail hands down, and why not! for it features a mummified human toe in a simple shot of Whiskey, usually Yukon Jack.
The custom has a story, and it all started during the prohibitions. In the 1920s, the rum running Linken brothers, Louie and Otto were caught in a blizzard and Louie accidentally wet his right foot and when they reached their cabin, his right foot was frozen solid. To prevent gangrene Otto used his axe to chop off Louie's toes and he kept them in a jar of alcohol.

In 1937, legend has it that Captain Dick Stevenson found this jar and the idea of the Sourtoe Cocktail Club popped in his mind, the membership criteria being “You can drink it fast. You can drink it slow. But your lips must touch that gnarly toe.”

Shake ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into glass. Add a cocktail olive.

  • Anisette

    Anisette is as the name suggests, an anise flavoured liqueur most commonly consumed in the Mediterranean countries. It is a colourless, sweet liqueur and the sweetness comes from the added sugar, which is in contrast with dry anise flavoured spirits like Absinthe.

    Anisette have two distinct production variations, one is a distilled drink, created by distilling fermented anise, and the other is a simple maceration of anise filtered to Anisette.

    Note that often Pastis liqueur is confused with Anisette but Pastis is different and it uses Licorice and Anise.

    Note: To substitute Anisette in a cocktail, if absolutely necessary, either steep Anise Extract and Anise Oil ( preferably Green Anise, since Anisette is created with Mediterranean Green Anise ) in neutral Vodka for a few days and add sugar syrup to finish, and use, or use Anise Seed and follow Home Recipes for Anisette to create your own.

  • Maraschino Liqueur

    Maraschino Liqueuris a liqueur of Marasca Cherries. these small, sour cherries are fruit of the Tapiwa Cherry Tree that grow wild along the Dalmatian coast of Croatia, and the distilled liqueur has a unique aroma.

  • Triple Sec

    Triple-Sec is an Orange flavoured liqueur from France. It is made by macerating sun dried orange peel in alcohol for a day or more before a three step distillation. Triple Sec has a 15% to 40% ABV.

    The Triple Sec name refers to the process of distillation. Sec in French means dry or distilled and triple refers to the triple distillation process.

    It's been a popular liqueur for more than 150 years, the Dutch East India Company created orange liqueurs by steeping orange peels in alcohol from the island of Curaçao and called it Curaçao liquor, and unlike Triple Sec, the Dutch added spices and herbs to the orange and Curaçao comes in a variety of colours such as clear, orange or blue. Blue Curaçao being the most used of them, in cocktails. Triple Sec is made from neutral spirits and the Orange peel used is harvested from oranges that have the skin still green, so that the essential oils are still in the skin and has not been absorbed into the flesh. This gives Triple Sec the intense flavour.

  • Irish Whiskey

    Irish Whiskey or Uisce Beatha ( same as French Eau de vie or Water of Life ) was the most popular spirit of the world once,
    Irish Whiskey was one of the earliest distilled drinks in Europe, it is believed that the Irish Monks brought the technique of perfume distillation back to Ireland from Southern France and modified that to distill drinkable alcohol. The early Irish Whiskey was not what it is today and it was more a distilled whiskey infused with herbs such as thyme, anise or mint.

    Irish Mist is a whiskey liqueur created using one such original recipe, but by current standards, although it is created just like early Irish Whisky was made with herbal infusions, it'll be categorised as a liqueur.

    Although it seems like Whiskey has been produced in Ireland since 1000 CE but the first written record of it can be found from 1405 in the Annals of Clonmacnoise, that is a good 89 years before Scotland.

    Irish Whiskey has a smoother finish as opposed to the smoky, earthy overtones of a Scotch. The smoky overtones in Scoth comes from drying the malted barley using peat smoke, but peat is rarely used in the malting process in Ireland, leaving a few like Connemara peated Irish malt whiskey and Pearse Whiskey.

  • Angostura Bitters

    Angostura Bitters is a concentrated bitters based on gentian, herbs and spices, from the House of Angostura in Trinadad and Tobago. Note that the Angostura Bitters from the House of Angostura do not contain Angostura bark.
    However, Angostura Bitters or Angobitter offered by other brands like Riemerschmid and Hemmeler, contain angostura bark, possibly to justify using the word "Angostura" in their names.
