Exploring the Pickleback Culture - From Bushwick to Global Phenomenon

Starting when, could Americans order mixed drinks in a bar?

MORE

Americans were happily ordering cocktails at bars since 1860, but then in the 1920, Prohibition was enacted and then, after long thirteen years, In 1933 the 21st Amendment was passed repealing Prohibition.

This amendment gave states the power to control alcohol sales within their own borders. So, while some states continued to prohibit alcohol sales others quickly lifted their bans.

As a result, Americans were able to order mixed drinks in a bar starting in 1933. A happy goodbye to hush hush speakeasies and bootlegging of hooch, it was.

The unusual savory pickleback

The Pickleback, a simple yet intriguing combination of whiskey followed by a shot of pickle juice, has carved a unique niche in the cocktail world. Its history, origin, and the cultural phenomenon it has become offer a fascinating glimpse into how a seemingly odd pairing can gain international acclaim and spawn a variety of similar practices, such as the Brooklyn Hooker.

History and Origin

Although, in Nordic countries and, Russia, washing down a shot of Vodka with a shot of pickle brine has been a common practice for centuries, it was rarely known outside Russia or the cold cold Nord. The Pickleback's story begins in 2006 at the Bushwick Country Club in Brooklyn, New York. Bartender Reggie Cunningham was introduced to the concept by a customer, described as a "gravelly-voiced Southern chick," who insisted on having her whiskey shot followed by pickle brine. Despite initial skepticism, Cunningham found the combination surprisingly palatable, leading to the birth of the Pickleback.  The drink quickly gained popularity among bartenders and patrons alike, spreading from Brooklyn to bars worldwide. Its name, "Pickleback," was coined by Cunningham, and the drink became a symbol of bartender camaraderie and innovation.

Importance in the Cocktail World

The Pickleback has garnered attention not just for its unique taste but also for its supposed benefits, such as hangover prevention and muscle cramp relief. While scientific evidence supporting these claims is limited, the practice of chasing whiskey with pickle juice has been embraced in various cultures, particularly in Russia and Nordic countries, where it is a traditional remedy. The Pickleback's popularity has also led to the creation of numerous variations, incorporating different spirits and types of brine, showcasing the versatility and creativity within the cocktail community

Variations and Related Practices

One notable variation of the Pickleback is the Brooklyn Hooker, also known as the Tennessee Hooker, which substitutes the traditional whiskey with Jack Daniel's and is followed by a shot of pickle juice. This variation highlights the adaptability of the Pickleback concept, allowing for regional preferences and ingredients to influence new versions of the drink. The Pickleback has also inspired a broader trend of pickle juice-based cocktails and drinks, extending beyond the realm of shots. From pickle juice cocktails to packaged pickle-flavored beverages, the tangy brine has found its way into various aspects of the beverage industry, offering a unique flavor profile that complements and enhances alcoholic drinks.

Pickled by pickle

The Pickleback, with its humble origins in a Brooklyn bar, has become a global sensation, transcending its initial novelty to become a respected and versatile component of the cocktail world. Its ability to inspire variations like the Brooklyn Hooker and influence the broader trend of pickle juice in cocktails demonstrates the dynamic and evolving nature of drink culture. Whether as a hangover cure, a bartender's handshake, or a culinary experiment, the Pickleback and its derivatives continue to captivate and intrigue, proving that sometimes the most unlikely combinations can lead to the most memorable experiences.
