Alcohol Thermometers are not uncommon even today, in fact the first thermometer designed were alcohol thermometers. Alcohol Thermometers operate in a different temperature range than Mercury thermometers, while Mercury has a higher boiling point and can be useful in measuring high temperatures, Alcohol thermometers are used to measure temperatures below -70 C.

However that is not the point, the point is that early thermometers from the 1600s used Brandy instead of pure alcohol, unlike modern alcohol thermometers, and were eventually replaced by mercury.

The amaretto contributes nutty marzipan essence, while Grand Marnier provides candied orange sweetness. Finally, the peach schnapps gives it a stone fruit twist. Stir together over ice for an unpredictably delightful flavor medley.

  • Amaretto Almond Liqueur

    Amaretto is a liqueur, a sweet Italian liqueur that originated in Saronno. There are different brands and each have their slight variations and ingredients vary from apricot kernel, bitter almonds, peach stones or almonds, all these are natural sources of the benzaldehyde that brings the almond flavour to the liqueur. Amaretto usually contains a 21% to 48% Alcohol by Volume.

    Amaretto liqueur can be drunk straight or used as an ingredient in mixed drinks, or with coffee.

    The name Amaretto originated from the Italian word amaro, meaning bitter. Amaretto's bitterness is derived from the drupe kernel and although the bitterness of Amaretto tends to be mild, sweeteners and at time sweet almonds are added to enhance the flavour of the final product.

  • Grand Marnier Orange Liqueur

    Orange Liqueur is the generic name for orange fruit based liqueurs, there are two traditions of orange liqueur, Triple Sec and Curacao, two major brands being Cointreau from the Triple Sec tradition and Grand Marnier from the Curacao tradition.

  • Southern Comfort Peach Liqueur

    Southern Comfort is now branded as a Whiskey Liqueur and is associated with bourbon , but originally the brand produced peach liqueurand was one of the few peach liqueurs in the market. Produced using neutral spirit and over 100 ingredients, the final liqueur matured for eight months before bottling.

Neel B is an Electronics and Telecommunications Engineer and martial arts and fitness enthusiast. He is an avid reader, compulsive doodler, and painter. His love for cocktails arises from the art in it and the history that traces the ups and downs of modern civilisation over centuries.

Maniis an ERP and SaaS developer and architect by day and a cocktail enthusiast in her leisure. She holds a Masters in Computer Application and Programming. In addition to writing stories on the history of cocktails and alcohol, she has a special interest in cocktails in literature. She believes that the perfect cocktail can make any moment special.
