Bourbon Whiskey

Bourbon, the classic American spirit

Something so deeply rooted in history and culture yet always so contemporary, has always been seen as an America only Whiskey while Scotch ruled the world.  Bourbon has played an essential role in American culture and the economy of the nation, from its humble origins in the backwoods of Kentucky to its current reputation as a premium spirit sought after by connoisseurs all over the world today, and is no less than it's Scottish counterpart. Its distinct flavour and silky mouthfeel have made it a drinking favourite for years, and its fascinating history represents the tale of the United States. In what follows, we will look at Bourbon whiskey's rich history, cultural significance, and enduring heritage as one of America's cherished beverages.
Basics
Bourbon whiskey, made primarily from corn and aged in charred oak barrels. began its journey from Bourbon County, Kentucky. Technically, there is no restriction or legal binding that Bourbon has to be made in Bourbon County, Kentucky alone, the name "Bourbon" has become synonymous with the state and the drink itself.
The earliest evidence of distilling whiskey, or if we may say, Bourbon whiskey, can be traced back to the late 18th century, when settlers in the region began distilling whiskey from the abundant corn crops.
Overtime, Bourbon evolved into a quintessential American cultural symbol and it has grown into a significant industry that generated significant employment in Kentucky and other states of America.
It has become a favourite among whisky enthusiasts all over the world thanks to its distinctive flavour profile and velvety mouthfeel, and its continued appeal is proof of its status as one of the great American libations.

Origins of Bourbon Whiskey

The exact origin of Bourbon is disputed by historians. While a section of scholars agrees with the origin and early distillation of whiskey in Kentucky, another section contests that and cite evidence that suggests it may have been produced as early as the late 18th century in other regions of the US, including Pennsylvania and Virginia.
Regardless of its exact origins, Bourbon whiskey quickly became popular in the United States, especially in the South and Midwest. The use of corn as the primary ingredient in Bourbon was a reflection of the abundance of this crop in these regions, and its aging in charred oak barrels was a nod to the prevalence of oak trees in these areas as well.

Early Bourbon Production

Early Bourbon production was a bit of random operation, each individual farmer and distiller producing their own unique variation of the bourbon. But as the market for Bourbon expanded, bigger distilleries started to emerge, and production standards started to emerge, and Bourbon as a standard American spirit was born.

One of the earliest and most influential of these large distilleries was the Old Pepper Distillery. IT was established in Lexington, Kentucky in the late 18th century by Elijah Pepper.

Pepper's Bourbon quickly gained a reputation for its immaculate quality and became a favorite of many of the country's influential figures, including Henry Clay and Andrew Jackson.

Bourbon and American Culture

With time the whiskey produced in Kentucky gained popularity across the land, and with increasing popularity, the cultural significance of Bourbon took shape too. A cultural significance that extended beyond its role as a simple beverage. In the South, Bourbon became associated with hospitality and the genteel way of life that was characteristic of the region. In the Midwest, it was seen as a reflection of the rugged individualism that was central to the region's identity.

Popular culture also reflected this cultural relevance. In literature, figures that typified the spirit of the American frontier, such Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn  * and Bret Harte's Tennessee's Partner, were frequently pictured as drinking bourbon. Musicians like Hank Williams and Muddy Waters lauded bourbon, and it became a common motif in country and blues songs.

* Note on Huck Finn

Note that in Huckleberry Finn, alcohol is portrayed as both a highly destructive influence as is in the case of Finn?s childhood in the hands of an abusive alcoholic father, and as part of growing up and a not so negative influence as in parts of the story where Finn and his friend Tom Swayer have been portrayed as drinking Bourbon. Although it is worth noting that the book was written in a different era, and attitudes towards alcohol consumption were different then. Additionally, Huck is portrayed as a mischievous and rebellious character, so his behavior may not necessarily be seen as exemplary.

Prohibition and Bourbon

The Bourbon industry endured numerous challenges in the 20th century,  the most notable among them being Prohibition, which made the production and sale of alcoholic beverages in the United States illegal from 1920 to 1933. Many Bourbon distilleries had to shut shop or explore alternative sources of income during this time. Many of these survived by producing alcoholic medicines, that found a dual purpose in public life. **
However, Prohibition also had some unexpected consequences for the Bourbon industry. Many Bourbon distillers, unable to sell their product legally, turned to the production of medicinal alcohol, which was still legal under Prohibition. This loophole allowed many distilleries to stay afloat during this difficult time, and also helped to preserve the art of Bourbon-making until Prohibition was repealed in 1933.

**

The production of alcoholic medicines, which were excluded from the prohibition regulations, allowed several distilleries to survive the ban. These medications were frequently sold as tonics or elixirs and claimed to have curative qualities that could treat a wide range of illnesses. Even though many of these so-called "medicines" were really just high-proof whisky, they helped distilleries continue operating their stills in the face of government crackdowns. After Prohibition was repealed in 1933, the creation of these drugs also helped to prepare the way for the recovery of the American whisky industry since many distilleries were able to employ their existing resources to start making high-quality, legal whisky once more.

The Rise of Small-Batch Bourbon

Post Prohibition Era, Bourbon saw a resurgence in popularity and new distilleries sprang up quickly across the nation. But the independent distilleries didn't get back the glory of the pre-Prohibition era, and, just a handful of major manufacturers continued to regulate the market, and Bourbon's quality was often inconsistent.

This hegemony of the big distilleries finally saw a welcome change in the 1980s, when, several small, independent distilleries began to focus on the production of high-quality, small-batch Bourbon.

These distilleries, such as Maker's Mark and Knob Creek, ushered in a postive change to the profile of Bourbon, Bourbon turned into a niche and specialised spirit, and since then it has gone beyond its national spirit identity into an eclectic spirit that competes with the rarest of Scotch.

Small-batch bourbon is now regarded as a luxury spirit, with many collectors and enthusiasts looking for extremely uncommon and prized bottles. A renewed appreciation for the conventional manufacturing techniques, like the use of pot stills and ageing of Bourbon in charred oak barrels, has also been sparked by the popularity of small-batch Bourbon.

Bourbon Today

As integral a part of the American way of life Bourbon today is, it is indeed by its own merit and long association with the history of the land. According to the Kentucky Distillers' Association, Bourbon is a $8.6 billion industry that supports nearly 20,000 jobs in Kentucky alone.

The popularity of Bourbon has also led to a renewed interest in American whiskey in general. In recent years, verities of American whiskey such as rye whiskey and Tennessee whiskey have been gaining popularity among drinkers.

However, Bourbon remains the king of American whiskey, and its cultural significance is unlikely to fade anytime soon. From its origins in Kentucky to its current status as a premium spirit, Bourbon has played an important role in the history of the United States and remains an important part of American culture.
