Americans drink, no doubt, but when it comes to a few special holidays, we drink like it's the last day on earth

Americans drink already, but when it comes to binge drinking, there are a few holidays when they drink like a fish, no, not a fish, a whale. National studies have found that more alcohol is consumed per person on the Fourth of July than any other day of the year. The top five drinking days in America are the Super Bowl, St. Patrick's Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day and the Fourth of July. Memorial Day and the Fourth of July are the only two holidays that are in the top five for both alcohol consumption and binge drinking.

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, as many as 37 million American adults binge drink. Binge drinking is defined as drinking five or more alcoholic drinks within two hours for men, and four or more drinks within two hours for women. The CDC reports that 1 in 6 American adults binge drinks about four times a month, consuming an average of eight drinks per binge. So which holidays see the most excessive drinking?

First of all, let's not forget to stay responsible and yet enjoy the holidays, with drinking and merry making. Drinking more than usual, once in a while is not a crime, but when one is binge drinking regularly, it is a problem.

Americans do love to drink. In fact, a study done in 2018 showed that 55% of American adults reported drinking alcohol in the past month. That's more than half of the population! And of those adults who drink, 7% reported binge drinking.

The holidays are a time for family and friends to get together and celebrate. There are several holidays that record the maximum drinking per person, but surprisingly, when it comes to record liquor sales volume for the year, it's the day before Thanksgiving. According to the National Retail Federation, Americans spend an average of $700 on Thanksgiving, and about $800 on Christmas.

Blackout Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving, is the busiest drinking day of the year in the United States. Liquor sales are at their highest on this day. On blackout Wednesday, Americans go out and drink more than they would on any other day of the year. This is mainly because it's the day before Thanksgiving, the busiest shopping day of the year. Liquor sales are at their highest on this day, and people tend to celebrate in style.

In terms of volume, Blackout Wednesday is followed by Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve, and Super Bowl Sunday.

However, if we drop the Blackout Wednesday off the list, because the sales volume that day might also be a precursor to the grand celebrations the next day, the top 10 American holidays when Americans drink the most would be: New Year's Eve, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Fourth of July, St. Patrick's Day, Thanksgiving Eve, Christmas Eve, Halloween, Easter, and Super Bowl Sunday.

St Patricks Day

St Patrick's Day

On March 17, 1765, St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was executed in Rome. The date is now celebrated in the United States as St. Patrick's Day. In the early 1800s, observances of the holiday in America were largely confined to the Irish population.

According to Dr. Michael Francis's 2017 research, the first recorded St Patrick's Day celebration in America took place in St. Augustine, Florida in 1600. While, in the Thirteen American Colonies, the Charitable Irish Society of Boston organized the first Saint Patrick's Day celebration in 1737. This was a few decades before the Colonies declared independence from Great Britain.

The observance gained importance with more Irish immigrants arriving in America, and today it's an observance of National importance, although not an official holiday in most states. Americans love to celebrate on St. Patrick's Day by indulging in a few too many drinks. Not only is this day a national holiday, but it's also considered the unofficial start of the summer bar scene. Halloween

Halloween is a holiday that is celebrated on the night of October 31. The word Halloween is a shortening of All Hallows' Evening, also known as Hallowe'en or All Hallows' Eve. Traditionally, Halloween is the night when supernatural beings such as ghosts, witches, and goblins come out. People dress up in costumes and go trick-or-treating.

It is celebrated in the United States of America and according to a study done in 2019 by the National Retail Federation, it is estimated that Americans will spend about 9.1 billion dollars on Halloween. This includes buying costumes, candy, and decorations. Halloween is a time for Americans to dress up in costumes and go trick or treating.

Americans largely celebrate Halloween by drinking. October being the month of Oktoberfest and the weather quietly getting colder, this is already the time to snuggle up to the heater in the evenings and drink some grownup-ish drink to enjoy the chill. That adds to the festivities surrounding Halloween and the sale of spirits see a sharp rise during this weekend when spirits visit us.

Easter PArty

Easter

Americans drink a lot of alcohol on holidays like Easter. This is often seen as a sign of celebration, especially when it's of religious nature. The Easter holiday is a time when Americans let their hair down and drink copious amounts of liquor. Sales of liquor soar during this period, as people celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This is also the time of year when many Americans indulge in their love of pork products. Whether or not you celebrate Easter, it's important to remember that alcohol can lead to dangerous consequences.

Curiously, as per Google, Bloody Mary is the cocktail that sees a spike in search trends during the Easter. Predictable, isn't it?

Super Bowl Sunday

The Super Bowl came about because in 1960, the American Football League (AFL) was created. This was done by a group of businessmen who were trying to get their own pro football franchises, but the NFL wouldn't let them expand.

By playing a more wide-open brand of football, the AFL became a rival league and helped pro football become more popular than baseball.

The Super Bowl was designed ahead of the merger of the AFL and the NFL in 1970. The goal was to create a championship game that would help the merger of the fan base and was designed as a Champion of Champion game between the Champions of the two leagues.

Although the first event didn't see success, not the Super Bowl we know today. It wasn't until the third game that saw tickets actually sell out, which was in 1972. The game has been a resounding success since, with Super Bowl Sunday becoming an unofficial American holiday. In fact, on Super Bowl Sunday, Americans drink more beer than any other day of the year. It's estimated that 325.5 million gallons of beer are consumed on Super Bowl Sunday. When it comes to cocktail, Americans seem to resort to the classics like Daiquiri and Martinis on this day. Guess no time to waste on deciding on a cocktail, the classics are the best.
